Mission Statement for New Jersey League of Conservation Voters
The New Jersey League of Conservation Voters (NJLCV) is a non-partisan, non-profit, public education, policy making and political action organization that works to make environmental protection a top priority with elected officials, decision-makers and the voters. All New Jerseyans have a right to clean water, clean air and abundant open spaces that provide our food, outdoor recreation, connection to the natural world, economic prosperity and health. NJLCV evaluates the environmental performance of elected officials; seeks adoption and implementation of key policies, regulations and legislation; and endorses and elects environmental leaders to office in the Garden State.
Background and Strategy
New Jersey has a long tradition of non-partisan leadership on environmental issues, and a strong, diverse and effective constituency for environmental issues. Some of the nation's earliest and strongest environmental laws and regulations were adopted and enacted here. Unfortunately, in recent years far too few elected officials have made the environment and our health a priority, and many citizens are concerned that our environmental laws, regulations and programs are under attack by those who would roll back the substantial progress which has been made in the last 50 years. These assaults harm all of our communities and have a disproportionate impact on our urban residents.
NJLCV seeks to inform and educate decision-makers on environmental issues, policies, and legislation on an on-going basis. On an annual basis, NJLCV holds elected officials accountable for their actions on key environmental issues by tracking their voting records and other activities, so their constituents know where they stand on key environmental issues. NJLCV develops and publicizes a rigorous environmental “scorecard” that voters can use to distinguish between those elected officials who act to protect and improve our quality of life and those who act against the environment and public health. NJLCV develops a proactive environmental agenda seeking adoption of key policies and laws needed to safeguard the environment of every community – urban, suburban, and rural - throughout the Garden State.
NJLCV also works to educate voters about important environmental issues, so they can make their voices heard with their elected officials. First and foremost, NJLCV informs voters about the environmental voting scores of their elected officials, so they are better able to make informed decisions at the ballot box. NJLCV also educates voters about the candidates that we have endorsed through a rigorous and transparent process and those who don’t make the grade on the environment. In addition, NJLCV alerts the public and the media of key actions of elected officials and closely monitors regulatory agencies and executive appointments.
Participation in the political process is essential to protecting our environment and health. NJLCV will undertake initiatives to expand public participation in the political process and give a powerful voice to citizens who value the environment.
