Assemblyman Gary Schaer

Assemblyman Gary Schaer was elected to the NJ General Assembly in November 2005 and represents Legislative District 36, which includes which includes parts of Passaic and Bergen counties. 

Assemblyman Schaer began his 25th year as a Councilman of the City of Passaic, has served as Passaic Acting Mayor for 6 months, and has been chosen by his colleagues to serve as Council President for 22 years. He has been honored by the Passaic County Probation Officers Association, the Passaic City Housing Authority, the Passaic City Public Library, and received the Abe Berliner Award from Home Care Options for making a substantial contribution to the quality of life of residents in Passaic County. Assemblyman Schaer sponsored an important environmental bill appropriating money from the state General Fund to help mitigate lead-based paint issues in New Jersey. For his pro-environmental voting record, Assemblyman Schaer received a 95% on New Jersey LCV’s 2017 Environmental Scorecard. He also supported legislation that protects clean drinking water in New Jersey. 

Assemblyman Schaer serves as Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee and as a member of the Financial Institutions and Insurance, and Education Committees, and he has been serving as Deputy Speaker since 2014.
