2026-2027 New Jersey LCV Common Agenda for the Environment Legislative Priorities

Each legislative session, New Jersey LCV brings together a diverse cross-section of New Jersey environmental leaders and surveys our members to form a legislative Common Agenda for the Environment, reflecting policy priorities important across the New Jersey environmental community. For 2026-2027, New Jersey LCV’s Common Agenda  priorities are:

  • Defending our Democracy
We will protect and expand voting rights by passing the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act (A1715/S282), because a strong, inclusive democracy is the foundation of all environmental progress. Communities most impacted by pollution and climate change must be able to fully participate in the decisions that affect their health, environment, and future. At a time when we are seeing federal voting protections dismantled, New Jersey must step up and lead—because protecting voting rights is not separate from environmental policy; it is essential to it.
  • Keeping Public Lands in Public Hands
We will pass the Liberty State Park Protection Act (S2924) to defend the People’s Park against privatization and monetization from corporate billionaires. It is critical we keep this green space public, accessible, and protected not only for the residents of New Jersey’s most densely populated county, but for the sensitive ecosystems there and those who enjoy the park from around the world. It’s time to keep public lands in public hands - permanently.
  • Delivering an Equitable Clean Energy Future
It’s time to take the energy - and climate - crises head on. We know that truly clean energy like solar and battery storage is the fastest, most affordable way to deliver energy and climate relief - all while creating jobs. We also need to make sure that large load users like data centers pay their fair share, not putting their profits on the backs of New Jersey’s working families - which is why we’re supporting the Data Center Tariff Bill (S731/A796). That’s why we’re supporting legislation to make sure they are responsible for the strain being put on our grid and driving up our prices, like the Data Center Tariff Bill (S731/A796). We need to reform and modernize our grid and make sure that ratepayers aren’t left footing the bill.
  • Protecting Our Health: Safeguarding New Jersey’s Clean Water
With federal clean water protections being weakened and eliminated, it is more important than ever for New Jersey to act decisively to safeguard our waterways, drinking water supplies, and the health of our communities. Legislation to safeguard New Jersey’s clean water will advance safe, affordable drinking water for every resident, no matter their ZIP code;  protect rivers, streams, and drinking water sources from pollution; and  ensure public health comes first.
