TRENTON – The New Jersey League of Conservation Voters (NJLCV), the leading political voice for the environment in the state, celebrated Tuesday’s nomination of Phil Murphy, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate endorsed by the green group.

NJLCV was the first statewide environmental organization to endorse Murphy, in February, citing his ambitious vision for a clean energy future and his ability to make New Jersey a national leader on environmental issues once again. The league’s Super PAC, the NJLCV Victory Fund, drew attention for spending $130,000 on a digital and mail campaign highlighting Murphy’s environmental credentials in the two weeks leading up to June 6, among the few Super PACs to spend significantly before the primary.

“Climate change is the No. 1 issue of our lifetimes, and, given what we’ve been seeing from Washington, it is now more important than ever that a candidate vying to lead our state has a set of plans to increase the use of clean energy sources, make our coast more resilient to superstorms, modernize public transportation, and reduce air pollution in cities,” said Drew Tompkins, policy coordinator of NJLCV.

“Phil Murphy has been talking about these issues throughout his campaign and NJLCV is steadfast in our confidence that he is the person we need in the governor’s office to make New Jersey an environmental leader once again. We want to congratulate him on his primary victory. NJLCV and the NJLCV Victory Fund are proud to have helped him on his journey to the Democratic nomination.”

A polling memo prepared by the Mellman Group for the NJLCV Victory Fund before the primary found strong support for Murphy and his agenda. The poll found that Murphy’s 100% clean energy plan had support among 86% of likely Democratic Primary voters. Significantly, half the Democratic Primary electorate self-identified as ‘environmentalists’ in the poll. The polling memo can be seen here.
