New Jersey LCV Demands Accountability for Minneapolis Raids and Out-of-Control ICE Actions
In response to the escalating violence and targeted raids by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis and across the nation, Allison McLeod, Interim Executive Director of the New Jersey League of Conservation Voters, issued the following statement:
“A healthy democracy and a healthy environment are inseparable. We cannot protect our air, water and climate if our government is more interested in terrorizing its own residents than in serving the public good. The illegal escalation of violence against immigrant communities in Minneapolis is a direct assault on the democratic values that underpin everything we fight for at New Jersey LCV.
A strong democracy ensures that our elected officials are accountable first to the people and to the rule of law. When we see federal agencies operating without oversight and tearing apart the fabric of our communities, it is a symptom of a broken system where the voices of the vulnerable are silenced to protect the powerful.
In New Jersey, where one in four residents is foreign-born, this isn't just a national news story — it’s personal. Our immigrant neighbors are the backbone of our workforce, our economy and our collective movement, for the environment and otherwise. New Jersey is stronger because of our diversity. When agencies like ICE go rogue, as we have seen in the heartbreaking raids inflicted on New Jersey families, it undermines the trust required for a healthy democracy and society.
New Jersey LCV stands in solidarity with those demanding an immediate end to these abuses. We join our national partners in calling for congressional leaders to use every lever of power — including the power of the purse — to hold the federal government accountable to the people they serve and the Constitution they pledged to defend. We will not achieve a sustainable future until every person in our state and our country can live free from the fear of state-sponsored violence in all forms. “
