NEW JERSEY LCV REFLECTS ON SUPERSTORM SANDY, APPLAUDS GOVERNOR MURPHY AND DEP ON RELEASE OF NJ PACT RULES

TRENTON – The following is a statement from Ed Potosnak, Executive Director of New Jersey League of Conservation Voters, recognizing the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy and the need to update regulations through the New Jersey Protecting Against Climate Threats (NJPACT) rules.

“Unfortunately, even as we recognize the 10th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, we are still planning developments using rainfall data from the 1990s. That’s why we applaud Governor Murphy and the DEP on their decision to move forward with updating the flood hazard rules under NJPACT. Using the best available science will help us plan more responsibly, potentially saving lives and untold dollars in property damage from future storms,” said Ed Potosnak, Executive Director, New Jersey League of Conservation Voters. “During Superstorm Sandy, 40 New Jerseyans tragically lost their lives and 30 more died during Hurricane Ida. Enough is enough. Updating the NJPACT rules is literally a matter of life and death for New Jerseyans, especially low-income and residents of color who may live in areas prone to flooding and have nowhere to turn. Updated rules would prevent the approval of new construction projects in areas that we know are unsafe.”
