NJ LCV Statement on Sherrill Administration Enforcement Action Against Vineland Data Center
Allison McLeod, Interim Executive Director, New Jersey LCV made the following statement regarding the Sherrill administration's announcement today to take enforcement action and issuing fines against a bad actor data center in Vineland for operating unpermitted, highly polluting diesel generators.
“Holding predatory data centers accountable is essential to protecting New Jersey families, local businesses and our shared environment. Across our state, power-hungry data centers are jacking up electricity costs, threatening our quality of life, polluting our air and consuming vast amounts of local water. Today’s enforcement action is a vital next step in holding Big Tech accountable and putting corporate polluters on notice that they cannot make record profits at the expense of New Jersey communities.
This action builds directly on the legislation Governor Sherrill signed just a few months ago to force data centers to pay their fair share for electricity infrastructure upgrades instead of dumping those costs onto working families.
But the situation on the ground in Vineland speaks to the depth of the challenge our state faces from billionaire Big Tech CEOs: a massive data center facility operating dozens of unpermitted, dirty diesel generators right near residential neighborhoods and local schools. Running illegal, highly polluting power generation is a slap in the face to public health, air quality and state environmental law.
Today's fines send a clear signal, and there is more to be done to systematically attack this problem. We must pass legislation that requires any new data center to bring their own new clean energy to the grid; that addresses siting and water consumption issues; and that protects our communities from the real threats data centers pose to our health and our environment. ”
