NEWARK -- Newly minted Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Murphy accepted his party's nomination Tuesday night and said he looks for to a "campaign based on policy and vision" in the race to succeed Gov. Chris Christie.

"New Jersey, here's my simple promise to all 9 million of you: I've got your back," Murphy said to a hundreds of enthusiastic supporters at a hotel in Newark less than an hour after he was the declared winner.

"People in New Jersey are demanding change and I am here to change things," Murphy said.

He assailed Christie, the outgoing Republican governor, for breaking promises to New Jersey voters and being guilty of brash tactics as governor he called "Christie politics. He also took aim at President Donald Trump.

Phil Murphy beat five rivals to win the Democratic primary for New Jersey governor on Tuesday.

Murphy promised to make New Jersey "a state where we draw a line against Donald Trump."

In his speech, Murphy said he will fully fund the state's public schools, expand pre-K, committee to clean energy and protect children of parents who are unauthorized immigrants.
