New Jersey LCV Makes Historic Investment in New Jersey Governor's Race to Back Sherill
Leading conservation and environmental advocacy group invests more than $2 million to put an environmental champion in the governor's office
Trenton, New Jersey – In the lead up to New Jersey’s governor’s race, New Jersey LCV and its related entities has emerged as one of the main backers of Mikie Sherrill’s campaign, investing more than $2 million to push the environmental champion over the finish line - as well as environmental champions in the legislature and in key local races. A full initial report of the group’s efforts can be found here.
New Jersey LCV’s more than $2 million effort, which included c3, coordinated and independent expenditure components, ranks among the top issue advocacy spends in the race — a mark of New Jersey’s place as a national leader in environmental protection and clean energy.
“At this critical moment in our state’s history, New Jersey LCV has stepped up to make sure that voters know that Mikie Sherrill is fighting to lower their energy costs and protect their air and drinking water,” said Ed Potosnak, Executive Director, New Jersey LCV. “Our campaign reached voters where they are to win support for a candidate who has big, bold ideas for our environment and who will make New Jersey a national leader on cheap and clean energy.”
The multifaceted efforts, which included significant investments in field, mail and digital programs, put energy affordability and environmental issues at top of the agenda on the campaign trail and drew sharp contrasts between Sherrill’s vision of lowering energy prices through clean energy investments and the pro-fossil fuel candidate Jack Ciattarelli, who wanted to enrich out-of-state billionaires while increasing electricity costs for working families.
We created six weeks of unskippable ads via YouTube, Meta, and online video, garnering over 70,000,000 impressions. Sent two flights of bilingual mailers, reaching 135,000 voters and commissioned independent analysis demonstrating Jack’s proposed energy plans would increase household costs by $850 a year.
And thanks to New Jersey LCV’s GiveGreen program, pro-environment donors contributed more than $156,000 combined to Sherrill’s campaign.
Through these efforts, New Jersey LCV made the environment one of the top three issues in the campaign.
In addition to its work to elect Sherrill, New Jersey LCV endorsed more than 120 local, county, and state legislative candidates who have pledged to advance pro-environment policies in communities across the state. This included a significant time investment by embedding more than five full-time canvassers across campaigns in the most competitive districts: 3, 4, 8, and 11, with additional canvassing and mailer support in districts throughout the state.
Separate and apart from New Jersey LCV’s work to advance candidates in the election, the New Jersey LCV Education Fund, the non-partisan 501(c)(3), invested more than $400,000 to lead a nonpartisan coalition to make the environment a top issue in the elections, lifted up environmental concerns in the race, and developed a comprehensive environmental policy guide that outlines actions the next governor can take to protect our environment and shift to cleaner, cheaper energy.
The Ed Fund also launched an $84,000 paid digital program, partnering with two New Jersey- based content creators, Jorge Alvarez and Monica Aksamit, to create original content and featuring that content in ads to educate the public about the importance of environmental issues. The Education Fund’s public education program achieved over 3.7 impressions and 126,000 engagements.
New Jersey LCV was the first issue-based group to endorse a candidate for Governor on February 19th in New Jersey’s 2025 open seat election, reflecting Potosnak added “Mikie Sherrill has a clear agenda to protect our natural environment, fight for healthier communities, and lower bills by executing the long-planned transition to a clean energy economy. Her plan will create high paying and sustainable jobs for New Jersey families and help contain costs New Jersey residents pay on energy bills. We’re proud of our historic investment in her campaign — the largest in New Jersey LCV’s history – and we look forward to working with her on environmental wins and fostering a future where all communities can thrive for generations to come.”
