New Jersey LCV applauds appointment of Lisa J. Plevin as Executive Director of the Highlands Council

CHESTER, NJ—Lisa J. Plevin, former Chief of Staff for Region 2 of the US Environmental Protection Agency, will become Executive Director of the Highlands Council.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to have someone with Lisa’s legacy of environmental leadership to lead the Highlands Council,” said Ed Potosnak, Executive Director of New Jersey League of Conservation Voters. “She has a long history of fighting against polluters and preserving New Jersey’s natural resources, and I have no doubt she will continue that fight in her new role."

In 2004, the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act was passed to protect the Highlands from the piecemeal development patterns that were consuming 5 square miles of Highlands forests and wetlands each year. The Highlands Council’s primary goal is to protect the Highlands, a physiographic region that provides water for more than 6.2 million people, more than 70% of New Jersey’s population.

NEW JERSEY LCV APPLAUDS GOVERNOR MURPHY’S CONDITIONAL VETO OF HAZARDOUS WASTE BILL

TRENTON, NJ- New Jersey League of Conservation Voters would like to thank Governor Murphy for his conditional veto of A3116/S879, which would amend the definition of “existing major hazardous waste facility” in “Major Hazardous Waste Facilities Siting Act.”

The legislation would create a loophole that allows the DuPont/Chambers Works plant to accept an expanded collection of hazardous wastes, which includes fracking waste from Pennsylvania.  If the bill had been signed in the current form, the company would have been able to avert the important environmental regulatory reviews to protect clean drinking water. The and allow the plant to renew commercial operations, which is unprecedented considering its toxic past.

The Governor sent the bill back to the Senate, asking simply to apply current public health and environmental protection to the wastewater treatment facilities.

NEW JERSEY LCV STATEMENT ON S877 ESTABLISHING A NUCLEAR DIVERSITY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

New Jersey League of Conservation Voters would like to thank the state Senate for holding the bill S877 establishing a Nuclear Diversity Certificate program. This bill attempts to put forth a clean energy plan for the state, but would undermine its own goals by putting a cap on renewable energy investment. New Jersey LCV supports asking the BPU how to achieve clean energy goals at the lowest possible consumer cost, which has been their role historically, and creating an Energy Master Plan that takes common sense renewable energy goals into consideration.
